This trek is a remote and ancient footpath in the same region as the Inca trail to Machupicchu, but less crowded and offering more spectacular views. This route provides a magnificent wilderness alternative for those who want to escape the more congested trekking routes.
On the trail, we pass through an amazing secuence of ecological zones, from sparsely vegetated alpine meadows flanking two spectacular snow peaks, down through a subtropical cloud forest, we arrive to Machupicchu.

We pick you up from your hotel and travel by private Bus to Mollepata town where we will stop to but some snacks and to have our breakfast, From Mollepata we have 40 more minutes by bus to Sayllapata where we start our hike and meet our arrieros “horsemen” and cook who help us to make easy our hike. we will walk enjoying the diversity of the flora and fauna at this altitude. Then we stop to enjoy our delicious lunch at Chuñuna which is a quiet spot. In the afternoon after 3 hours hike we arrive to our first campsite Soraypampa (3,800 m). Optional trek to the humantay lake. Overnight.

After a good breakfast, we leave Soraypampa, this is the hardest day because we have to climb to the Salkantay pass (4,600 m.) the highest point of our trip to Machupicchu, from where we will enjoy an spectacular view of the high snow capped mopuntains called Salkantay (6,271 m) and great views of Humantay and Huayanay mountains and small lakes. Later we hike downhill to the second camp site at ccollpapampa. Overnight
Along the way we’ll see full of Highland grass and a great variety of wildlife from the small finches, hummingbirds and toucans in the cloud forest, there is also a chance to see Andean Fox, White Tailed Deer and Viscacha (rabbit-like Chinchillas).

Our campsite for tonight is at Collpapampa (2900m, it is recommended to use insect repellent because the mosquitoes in this place have a nasty bite.

After an amazing breakfast we will continue our trekking to la playa, this will be about 12 km walking from Colpapampa. The trail takes us along the Lluskamayo river, on the way we will enjoy full of plantations of coffee and local fruits.
Tonight we will stay at the village of La Playa (2400m  which is really beautifull place and there are plenty of places where you can buy snacks and drinks, you can also try some of the locally grown coffee. If you are interested there is the option to visit some hot springs that are close by, let your guide know in advance so that he can organise this for you.

Today is the last day of the trek before we reach Aguas Calientes at the base of Machu Picchu. The main focus of today is a visit to the Inca site of Llactapata located on the mountainside high above. Following an original Inca Trail we’ll arrive to Llactapata by early to mid morning and can enjoy the fantastic views of Machu Picchu from that place.

After a tour of Llactapata in which we’ll learn about the Inca people and their culture we’ll head back down the mountainside to the Hydroelectric Station from where we’ll walk to Aguas Calientes town. Overnight in the hotel.

Today is the most important day of the whole trek that is why we will satrat early. we’ll take the first bus to Machu Picchu to enjoy first the sunrise and then we will have a 2 hour guided tour of the site during which you’ll learn about the Incas and visit all the most important areas of the citadel. After your tour you’ll have free time to explore the site by yourself and if you have permits to climb either Huayna Picchu or Machu Picchu mountain. We rate this Salkantay trek to Machupicchu as moderate.
There are no to many stone steps, as there are on the Inca Trail to Machupicchu, which can be very hard on the knees for many trekkers.
The main challenge on this trek is again the altitude. The hike will take you over the Salkantay pass (4,600 m.) that is why we recommend you to be well-acclimatized before this trek.

The best time of year to plan this expedition is the dry season from April to October when there is little rain, this time is considered as winter, during the day is really sunny and hot and really cold at night, the temperature is normally below freezing point
November to March is the wet season in Peru and trekking around Salkantay mountain is not recommended. the rain at this altitude can actually turn into snow.

The average walking time per day on this trekking is 6 to 8 hours

Our camping equipment is top quality (4 season tents that our staff will sets up for you at each campside and you will be gratefull for this quality tents, mattress, dining tent, kitchen tent, toilet tent and cooking equipment). Excellent cooking staff, plentiful meals (morning tea room service, breakfast, snacks, lunch, afternoon tea and dinner every day), vegetarian option. Food includes: pancakes, omelets, soups, fresh fruit, avocado, pasta, chicken, fish, meat, rice, hot drinks (including coca leaf tea which is excellent for the altitude). Food is rich in carbohydrates and suitable for trekking. Boiled water is also provided to fill up your water bottles.
we have a lot of vegetarian, vegan and gluten-free travellers and our cooks know how to cater to their needs. With adequate preparation and clear communication, we can accommodate all other types of dietary requests.

What you need to carry with you each day on the tour is a light day pack. In your day pack, you should carry bottle of water; some extra warm layers, scarf; a camera; a sun hat; and sunscreen.
Water is extremely important while hiking. You should start each day with 2L, knowing you fill up your water bottles at meal times.
The rest of your belongings – up to 8kg – are carried in a duffel bag that we provide you, by mules. All of the camping equipment needed on the trek is also carried by mules.
