Overview
This unforgettable and less-visited hike combines amazing mountain scenery, glacier lagoons, valley cloud-forest and Quechua communities famous for their textiles. You will have the opportunity to see thatched roof stone houses surrounded by herds of llamas and alpacas. This will also be an amazing opportunity to experience the short Inca Trail to Machupicchu. The trek itself is rated moderate, similar to the Inca Trail with two passes over 4450m. Therefore, it is important to be well acclimatized to the altitude.
Itinerary
DAY 1: Cusco – Lares Hot Spring – Kiswarani Comunity
To begin this trek, we pick you from your hotel at 5:00 am. It is a three-hour drive along the beautiful landscape of the Sacred Valley and through the Andes until we arrive at the Lares Hot Springs where you will enjoy your first breakfast enjoying the amazing views of the Andes Mountains. After breakfast, you will have time to enjoy the hot springs, which are divided into various pools ranging from freezing cold to boiling. They are all composed of pure volcanic water, which is medicinal in nature and considered to be good for your bones, stress, muscles, and headaches. After soaking in the baths for a while, we continue for 20 more minutes to the trailhead, which is over 3,300 m/ 10,827 ft above sea level. Here, we meet the horses and horsemen. You then hand over your duffel bags to the horsemen, who transport them to the campsite.
Your trekking begins with a two-hour gradual uphill hike, until lunch time at the first village, Kiswarani. They consider this part of the hike the potato valley, where local people farm many varieties of organic potatoes. We also show you some indigenous medicinal plants growing along the way. At this place, lunch will be prepared by our trekking chef.
After lunch, you will have some time to explore the village and visit some local families, where you will learn about the lifestyle and ancient traditions of the local people.
If there is time, we visit the school where teachers use Quechua because kids still speak Quechua better than Spanish. You can also bring school supplies to distribute if you’d like. After that, we continue with a gradual uphill hike of approximately two hours until we reach the campsite, where our trekking staff are waiting with the tents already set up.
You then enjoy a well-deserved dinner and time to rest.
If you wish, you can take some time to admire the constellations of the Southern Hemisphere.

Along the way, you pass local farms where potatoes, fava beans, and other Andean crops are cultivated. You have the opportunity to learn about Peruvian agriculture from local farmers who continue to work the land by hand using traditional Inca farming tools.
As the trail descends toward the Sacred Valley, you begin to feel the change in microclimate and notice new crops replacing those of the high mountains. In this region, locals grow corn, quinoa, kiwicha, peaches, avocados, and other fruits. Rich in Inca history, the trek concludes in the small Sacred Valley village of Huaran, located at 2,700 m / 8,858 ft. Here, you say farewell to your horses, muleteer, chef, and porters.
From Huaran, we continue by private transport to the Maras Salt Mines, a remarkable complex of approximately 3,500 salt ponds fed by a natural underground spring. Each pool produces 200–250 kg of salt per month through a completely natural process, and Maras salt is highly valued worldwide.
After the visit, we transfer you to your hotel in Ollantaytambo, where you spend the night.
Walking Distance: 9 km /6.2 miles

Day 4: Ollantaytambo – Inca Trail – Machupicchu

The train journey lasts approximately 1 hour and 30 minutes, arriving at Km 104, where we disembark and begin the final day of trekking to Machu Picchu. Please ensure you carry your original passport, as this is the first checkpoint along the Inca Trail.
After using the restroom facilities, we start the hike with a visit to the Chachabamba archaeological site, the first ancient Inca checkpoint for entering the Inca Trail. Here, you learn about the history of the site before continuing with a three-hour uphill hike to the most renowned Inca site along the trail, Wiñay Wayna.
Along the way, you enjoy spectacular views of the Machu Picchu Valley and the Urubamba River, as well as the region’s diverse flora and fauna. Waterfalls, panoramic mountain scenery, and views of Machu Picchu Mountain accompany the trail, which features a mix of flat sections, short ascents and descents, and stone steps. While some sections are narrow, the trail is safe.
Upon arrival at Wiñay Wayna, you enjoy a guided visit of the site. It is then a short walk to the lunch area, followed by time to rest. Afterwards, we continue with a one-hour hike to the Sun Gate (Inti Punku), where you are rewarded with breathtaking views of Machu Picchu, Huayna Picchu, and the surrounding mountains. The Sun Gate was traditionally used by the Incas to observe the sunrise over Machu Picchu during the summer solstice.
From the Sun Gate, it is an additional one-hour hike to reach the Machu Picchu citadel. Once there, you explore the watchtower area, an excellent viewpoint for capturing iconic photos of Machu Picchu away from the crowds.
Finally, we take a 25-minute bus ride down to Aguas Calientes, where we transfer to the hotel. Dinner is included.
