Itinerary
Detailed Itinerary
There are two departure options for this tour: 9:00 am or 1:00 pm. We pick you up from your hotel in Cusco and begin the experience by visiting the most famous Inca sites surrounding the city. The route has been designed to provide a complete overview of Cusco’s archaeological and spiritual importance.
Saqsayhuaman (The Royal House of the Sun)
Saqsayhuaman is one of the most impressive Inca archaeological sites in Cusco. Built during the 15th century under the rule of Pachacutec, this monumental complex is famous for its gigantic stone walls, made of enormous blocks that fit together perfectly without mortar.
Many historians believe Saqsayhuaman had both ceremonial and defensive functions. It is also one of the most important places for understanding the advanced engineering of the Incas. In 1536, this site became the setting of the resistance led by Manco Inca against the Spanish forces.
Today, Saqsayhuaman remains one of the most important cultural symbols of Cusco and is the main stage of the famous Inti Raymi celebration held every year on June 24.
Duration: 50 minutes
Q’enqo (Temple of Mother Earth)
The archaeological site of Q’enqo was an important ceremonial center during the Inca period. Located close to Saqsayhuaman, this site is known for its carved rock formations, underground passages, and ritual spaces.
Q’enqo is believed to have been associated with ceremonies dedicated to Pachamama, or Mother Earth. Its mysterious underground galleries and carved altar make it one of the most fascinating ritual sites near Cusco.
Duration: 30 minutes
Puka Pukara (The Inca Watchtower)
Puka Pukara, which means “Red Fortress” in Quechua, was likely used as a military control point guarding the access routes to Cusco. Its name comes from the reddish color the stones take on under certain light conditions due to the minerals in the rock.
Although smaller than the other sites, Puka Pukara offers a good perspective on the strategic organization of the Inca road system and beautiful panoramic views of the surrounding landscape.
Duration: 20 minutes
Tambomachay (Temple of Water)
Tambomachay, also known as the “Baths of the Inca,” is one of the finest examples of Inca hydraulic engineering. The site features carefully carved stone walls and a sophisticated water channel system that still carries a constant flow of fresh water throughout the year.
This temple was closely associated with the worship of water and may also have served as a place of ritual purification and rest for the Inca elite.
Duration: 30 minutes
Llamas and Alpacas Farm (Alpaca Sanctuary)
After visiting the archaeological sites, we continue to a local llama and alpaca farm. Here you will learn how to distinguish alpaca wool from the finer fiber of the famous vicuña, one of the most valued natural fibers in the world.
This stop also gives you the opportunity to take memorable photos with llamas and alpacas in a traditional Andean setting.
Duration: 30 minutes
Qorikancha
The tour ends with a visit to Qorikancha, the most important religious temple of the Inca Empire. Dedicated primarily to Inti, the Sun God, Qorikancha was also connected to other major deities such as Viracocha and Quilla, the Moon goddess.
Today, Qorikancha is one of the most remarkable places in Cusco because it combines original Inca stonework with Spanish colonial architecture built on top of the temple after the conquest. This unique contrast makes it an essential stop for any traveler who wants to understand the historical transformation of Cusco.
