Itinerary
Detailed Itinerary:
Cusco – Patabamba – Cusco
We pick you up from your hotel and travel to the community of Patabamba, located high in the mountains of the Sacred Valley of the Incas at approximately 3,800 m / 12,467 ft.
Traditional Welcome in the Community
Upon arrival, you will receive a warm welcome with traditional local music played on indigenous instruments. The reception is led by the community chief, known as the Varayoc, who greets visitors in a joyful and respectful way.
During this welcome, guests are invited to introduce themselves by sharing their name and country of origin, while enjoying a cup of muña tea, a traditional Andean herbal infusion known for its refreshing aroma and digestive properties.
Introduction to Andean Agriculture
We begin the experience with a presentation of traditional Andean agricultural tools used for sowing and harvesting crops since Inca times. This introduction helps visitors better understand the agricultural foundations of Andean life and the cultural importance of food preparation in the region.
Pachamanca Preparation Experience
Guests then have the opportunity to participate in the preparation of the Pachamanca, a traditional underground dish cooked with hot stones. Ingredients such as pork, lamb, chicken, guinea pig, potatoes, sweet potatoes, oca, fried plantain, and cheese are carefully placed inside the earthen oven to cook slowly.
This is one of the most special moments of the tour because it allows you to experience the preparation of a dish that has been shared by Andean communities for generations.
Andean Textile Demonstration
While the Pachamanca is cooking, the community presents a live demonstration of traditional Andean textile techniques. You will learn about the complete process, including shearing, washing, spinning, warping, and weaving.
This activity offers deeper insight into the craftsmanship and cultural identity of the community, showing how Andean families continue to preserve their textile knowledge today.
Pachamanca Lunch
Afterwards, we uncover the Pachamanca and share this delicious ancestral dish together with the community. The smoky flavor created by the underground cooking process makes Pachamanca one of the most special culinary experiences in Peru.
Farewell and Return to Cusco
At the end of the experience, we say goodbye to the community to the rhythm of their traditional music, bringing this unforgettable cultural journey to a close.
We then return to Cusco.
