Cusco – Cusipata – Rainbow Mountain – Cusco

We pick you up from your hotel at 4:00 am and begin our journey toward the community of Cusipata, which takes approximately 1.5 hours. Once there, we stop to enjoy breakfast before continuing deeper into the Andes.

Breakfast in Cusipata

After the early morning drive, breakfast gives us time to rest and prepare for the hike ahead. This is also a good moment to enjoy the mountain atmosphere before reaching the trailhead.

Drive to the Trailhead

After breakfast, we continue driving for about two more hours until we reach the trailhead at approximately 4,626 m / 15,177 ft above sea level. This is the starting point of our hike to Rainbow Mountain.

Hike to Vinicunca

The hike consists of an uphill walk of about one hour, depending on your pace and weather conditions. Along the trail, you will enjoy impressive mountain landscapes and observe local people in traditional Andean clothing.

It is common to see llamas, alpacas, sheep, and horses along the route. With some luck, you may also spot the vicuña, Peru’s national animal.

Rainbow Mountain Summit

Upon reaching the summit of Vinicunca at around 5,100 m / 16,626 ft, you will have time to rest, take photos, and admire the extraordinary views. From this point, you can appreciate both the colorful slopes of Rainbow Mountain and the spectacular snowy peaks of the Vilcanota Mountain Range.

Descent, Lunch, and Return

After enjoying the summit, we begin the downhill return hike to the trailhead, which usually takes about one hour. From there, we return to Cusipata, where we enjoy lunch.

After lunch, we drive back to Cusco, arriving at approximately 5:00 pm.
