Itinerary

Detailed Itinerary:

Cusco – Zurite – Killarumiyoc – Tarawasi – Chonta – Cusco

We pick you up from your hotel at 7:00 am and head northwest of Cusco. The route first crosses the Anta Plateau before descending into the beautiful Limatambo Valley at approximately 2,600 m / 8,476 ft.

Zurite Agricultural Terraces

Our first important stop is Zurite, home to some of the largest Inca agricultural terraces in the Cusco region. These terraces were built during the reign of the Inca emperor Wiracocha and were used for farming and seed preservation.

Today, the terraces are still significant and continue to be used as an experimental agricultural area for conserving and improving native crops such as potatoes, corn, and quinoa.

Killarumiyoq – Temple of the Moon

Next, we visit Killarumiyoq, the Inca Temple of the Moon. Its name means “Stone of the Moon”, and the site was dedicated to Mama Killa, the Moon Goddess in the Quechua tradition.

Here, you will see a large carved monolith, ceremonial sectors, terraces, and structures associated with Inca beliefs about fertility, agriculture, and the balance between masculine and feminine energies represented by the sun and the moon.

Tarawasi Ceremonial Center

After Killarumiyoq, we continue to Tarawasi, another important ceremonial center of the Incas. This site offers additional insight into the sacred and strategic importance of the Limatambo region during Inca times.

Lunch in Limatambo

At around 12:00 pm, we enjoy a box lunch in the town of Limatambo before continuing the journey toward the condor viewpoints.

Drive to Chonta

After lunch, we continue our ascent to Chonta. Along the route, you will enjoy spectacular panoramic views of the Vilcabamba Mountain Range, the Salkantay Glacier, the Apurímac Canyon, and the dramatic landscapes of the Peruvian Andes.

Upon arrival in Chonta, located at around 3,460 m / 11,279 ft, we begin a walk of approximately one hour to the viewpoints overlooking the canyon.

Condor Viewpoints in the Apurímac Canyon

At the viewpoints, you will have the opportunity to observe the Andean condor, one of the largest flying birds in the world, soaring naturally above the canyon walls. It is common to see between 2 and 15 condors gliding through the thermals, depending on the weather and season.

This is one of the most memorable moments of the tour and one of the best wildlife experiences available near Cusco.

Return to Cusco

At around 3:30 pm, we walk back to the town of Chonta and begin the return drive to Cusco, arriving at approximately 6:30 pm.
